Why does everyone think that people will take on a car payment they cant afford? Maybe people who could afford it, but were just waiting for a better deal, found one. I would have liked to participate, but I knew I could not afford a car payment and my car is paid off.

No Way. I do not want to be GUIDED or LED into purchasing a certain kind of auto. I have a small car to drive around town and to work, but picking people up at the airport or taking a trip over 2 hrs. long in this car is a joke. I want big and comfortable. Global Warming is nothing but a gimmack to get us to buy new and price-y.

My son's friend got a great deal on a new Nissan & traded in his old Pathfinder. He'll get much better gas mileage. Those carping that the program wasn't limited to American cars don't seem to know that most "foreign" cars sold in the US are also made here by American workers. And a lot of those crying about not having a job or money for a new car also don't seem to be able to spell simple words in English. Think that might have something to do with your employability??

My "clunker" has 314,000+ miles on it and gets 33 mpg, so she wouldn't qualify anyway. She's worth way more than $4500 off of new car payments even if I did qualify,(and the insurance cost will eat that $4500 up quickly!)

I think the "cash for clunkers" is a great idea there are alot of people who can not aford a down payment on a car and that gives them other options besides just jumping into something that they will regret and there are alot of people who have old junkers now they can up grade.. thank you to who ever come up with this i have always drove cheap cars and most of the time when they break down it cost more to fix them then it did to bye them so i have a yard full of JUNKERS.

I think alot of people are cashing in on this, but well not be able to pay for their new cars. and some people are cashing in on this and can afford to pay cash for a car anyway. Also some of the trade in vehicles could help out alot of people that can't afford a new car. They were mostly all good cars and could have been given to the poor who cannot afford a car, seeing as the gov. does not provide any adequate public transport and the way our cities are built , I doubt anyone can! I feel like this program was designed more for those who have jobs or money. They probably had a 3rd vehicle sitting around or the car company let their car slide. I have 1990 Subaru that someone gave me. After my car accident I did not have money to replace my car. My old car was a 1995; but, it was in great shape. This car is rusted out but it runs. So I will just make due with my "Clunker" or perhaps the government will give us new cars. LOL They gave the banks, insurance and car companies the tax payer money. In reality it hasn't helped the average person.

Timing is everything! We waited until the President's Day sales for a good used pickup truck and donated our '95 Dodge Ram 1500 to a charity for a lousy $500 tax write-off... then they started this program! We could've gotten $4500 IF we bought a truck with much better mileage so guessing it would NOT have been a Dodge contractor trimmed truck! LOL My '99 SAAB did not even make the list of eligible cars, so I paid $1500 for a 100k tune-up, brakes and plan on keeping it for another 100k at 27mpg easily.

I don't believe that the $4500. rebate can justify the extra cost to financing a new car. It is also a to narrow a program. And most people could not take advantage of the program. It also breaks my heart that many perfectly good vehicle were destroyed with no real purpose. There are still thousands of similar cars and trucks on the road that people need and little was gained after destroying all of those beautiful vehicles many people would kill for. Shame Shame.

No way! My car is 12 yrs old but still looks new and drives great! I love not having a car payment and will drive it til the day it dies. I think the cash for clunkers program has caused some people who cannot afford it to buy a car anyway and may result in defaulted loans later on. Then it will not be looked on as such a great program. And what a waste to destroy so many good used cars!

We looked into this program, my 1997 Caravan did qualify, but I was limted with what I could buy to replace it because my van got 18 MPG and the "new" car must have at least 2 MPG higher. The one minivan that qualified started at 25 K for the base model. As far as I'm concerned this program does not help anyone and in 6 months - 1 year we will be in the same boat as before because no one will be buying cars again.

Yes! My 19 year old son was able to do this and I think it is great. He had a '98 blazer and had been saving money to buy a newer used car to drive to college 3 days a week. With the money he had saved up, the dealer rebates & cash for clunkers, he was able to buy a brand new Pontiac G6 and only financed $7000. This will help build his credit and give him dependable transportaion for a long time.

I love my 7 year old Isuzu Rodeo Sport. If they would still manufacture it, I would buy a new one. In that case, I would exchange a not-so-good-mileage SUV for another one, hence, I would not qualify for the program. However, a friend of mine got a new car through the Cash for Clunkers program. The dealer claimed that the government site was so busy, that he was unable to enter the trade-in car into the computer. They gave him $2,800 as the trade-in value, and a piece of paper that when they get their money form the government, they will mail him a check for the difference. I am quite skeptical about the arrival of that check.

No, and I think it is poor judgement for anyone to do so. Our children will end up paying for the plan. It is our money. It might have been good if we hadn't bailed out the automotive companies, but the government has wasted too much of our money already. We are only building debt for a few. Instead we should be fining those who created the problem. And, I don't mean the lenders. It is those who forced them to sell to people who couldn't afford it, like the Acorn corporation. It is a good idea to help people get homes, but putting them in the position to lose them is literally cool. Special interest groups who were involved should pay.

After hearing stories of how this programs going, glad we didn't get involved with GM (government motors) There's nothing wrong with driving a beater car, as long as it gets us where we're going, and it's good on gas! Looks aren't everything with beater car, but we don't care. We just sold our Lincoln for more than book price, without any dealers, no government lol and no grief, no hassles either. We wouldn't buy new car today, next year, or on down the road. Have known to many folks who (barely) worked for GM (generous motors) before it became the new GM (government motors)!!!!

No I did not. I do not consider it a clunker thing. Just trying to get larger cars off the road for cheaper smaller, less safe ones. My husband saw so many cars that were newer turned to to be destroyed, and all the vehicles that look like clunkers were not included. I have three vehicles that we drive. The only one I can turn in is the newest one, which I don't even have 60,000 miles yet. The other two get too many miles to the gallon. Also it would cost me twice the insurance payment for six months for the one new vehicle than I pay for the three vehicles for a year. Also, if I need to have service on one, I have two others to get me where I need to go. My husband hasn't worked since 1999, so we have to keep our old clunkers.

I agree with Patrick on Aug 16. If US auto makers made cars that got 100 (or even 50) mpg and had lots of great features for passengers, we wouldn't need Cash for Clunkers. U.S. auto makers also make cars that at 80,000 miles start to need more & more expensive repairs, no matter how careful you are about maintenance, so why don't they work on cars that will run for 200,000 miles? The diesel trucks that haul so much all over our country SHOULD be redesigned to be less polluting too (and the drivers shouldn't be forced by economics to drive such long hours they're unsafe). Also, more solar & wind & ocean power--less coal & petroleum-- & only very carefully designed nuclear power AFTER we finish Yucca Mtn. so we can safely store the waste!

I have 3 cars that each have over 100,000 miles. None qualify for this program. Two have had to have major repairs and probably will have to be replaced. Instead of the government rewarding me for being thrifty and not driving road hogs (they all get decent mileage), as well as not being in debt, I will have to pay full price to replace them. The government rewards those who were wasteful to begin with. Don't even get me going on the mortgage bailouts. Regards from a homeowner who is totally debt free.

My car doen't qualify it has a combined rating of 21 the cut of is 18. In the long run one of the things this program will do is drive up used car prices by $200 to $300. So in the long run this will do a lot of harm to poor people who need a car for employment. Also a lot of the car loans involved in this program will be defaulted. Thats $4500.00 per loan down the toilet. You can probably expect at 20% to 25% default rate. What about some dishonest car dealers near the mexican or canadian borders taking the cars across the border and reselling them while certifying that they have been destroyed. Any time theres a government program of this nature it will have a 15% to 20% fraud rate.

The cash for clunkers program has only helped the auto makers. It has not helped used car dealers, or the american public who can't afford a new car payment. Now there will be a shortage of used cars, which will make those prices go up. Also, there will now be a shortage of used engine parts for our older cars. This has not been a good deal for the american people. I now drive an 04 Buick which gets 26 mpg in town. I did drive a '94 chevy which also got 24 mpg in town and 31 on the highway. My daughter has a new car and doesn't get that. My neighbor has a 1 yr old VW and doesn't get that either.

Nope, for a couple of reasons. my 2000 grand prix doesn't qualify with the gas mileage. Why would I go into more debt with a new car payment, when my husband is laid off? I disagree with the fact that they don't recycle the usable parts. They just crush them up. Perhaps people who can't afford a new vehicle could use those parts to fix the vehicle they do have, so that they can at least get to their jobs. I will end up paying for someone else's new vehicle with my tax dollars.

it would depend on the clunker! if it was a land yacht then I would trade it in on a smaller good gas milage car. I agree with everyone else...who wants a car payment and high gas bills. My daughter needs a car when she gets her license and she's getting a car that gets good gas milage.

Absolutely not. Even though my car would have qualified, I believe it is a scam. Sure they "give" you 4500, but then they just jack the stiker price.

no my care is paid for and I live in Michigan where this is a big deal. my husband retired before this went into effect and I don't think its a good deal....the auto companies should come up with some other plan that would benefit more people and put more dollars in the economy

The so called "Cash for Clunkers" is part of the economic stimulus program for Detroit and that is fine, just call it what it is. If the offerings of new vehicles from the automakers were truly masterpieces of engineering that got 100 mpg, of which they are capable of doing, or in the pursuit of non-petro-carbon alternatives, we would not need a cash for clunkers program. Every person in America would gladly exchange what they are driving right now for such a vehicle. This program is once again a method of extending our wretched excess of credit and carrying forward more debt. OK, lets be real serious how about a "cash for Clunkers" program for the millions of diesel trucks on our highways. 80% of our goods travel by truck, and these things pollute way more than you and me . More serious? No more coal fired power plants. Solar cells on every roof, or a roof garden! Sigh.

Absolutely not! This program will add to my already "too large" debt. A mortgage, insurance (home, car, life, health), college, etc. I have enough debt already.

Nope-Not a dope! There are provisions that leave buyers vulnerable!Too Risky!(note comment above by Will...)If we destroy those cars what are people who cannot or chose not to buy a new car supposed to do? Non-profits are suffering losses- but hey you got more jobs in the recycle yard... temporarily. This program makes no sense destroying perfectly good cars is ludicrous - how is this kind of waste considered "Green"??? It's irresponsible-period! We own a '00 van & a '94 Olds, both get about 24mpg and I love my clunkers! Don't we have to be satisfied at some point in our lives?

YES... we traded in a 1988 Dodge truck (12 mpg) for a new Chevy truck. It will not only decrease our dependence on foreign oil, but also helps the environment by reducing emissions. We may even convert it to propane. People who drive big gas-guzzlers are not being very patriotic.

No. I had a choice. Do cash for clunkers or take advantage of the $8,000.00 tax break for first time home buyers. Well, I just moved into my house this past weekend.

I have a 1995 Geo Prizm that still looks sharp 'cause I had it repainted 3 years ago; painting cured my new car fever! Realistically, my car is a Toyota built in the USA, has a little more than 81,000 miles. In retirement, my total mileage for last year was 2,862. I thought about it, then realized it would be foolish at a financial level. Why risk getting a lemon when you have a peach?
